OSSD Requirements for International Students: A Simple Guide

OSSD graduation requirements at a glance

Every student, whether in Ontario or overseas, must meet the same core requirements to earn the diploma:

• 30 credits total. This includes compulsory credits and optional credits. The number of compulsory credits depends on when a student started Grade 9. Students who began Grade 9 in September 2024 or later complete 17 compulsory credits, while earlier cohorts complete 18.
• 40 hours of community involvement. These are volunteer activities that can often be completed in your home community.
• The literacy requirement. Students must pass the Ontario Secondary School Literacy Test, known as the OSSLT, or complete the approved literacy course.
• Two online learning credits. Under Ontario policy, students earn a minimum of two online learning credits, with opt out provisions available.

Depending on when you began Grade 9, additional graduation requirements may apply. Students who entered Grade 9 in September 2024 or later must complete a Grade 9 or 10 Technological Education credit and one credit from the STEM-related compulsory course group. Ontario also introduced a financial literacy graduation requirement in Grade 10 mathematics beginning in September 2025.

Do international students need a study permit?

Students completing ROA courses online while remaining outside Canada generally do not require a Canadian study permit. You study from home, on your own schedule, and graduate with a recognized Ontario diploma.
