For most Nigerian students, the road to university runs through WAEC or NECO results and a JAMB UTME score. That works for Nigerian universities, but it is not what Canadian and other international universities are looking for. The Ontario Secondary School Diploma, or OSSD, is a Canadian high school credential built around the admission requirements those universities actually use, and it does not require a JAMB score at all. At Royal Ontario Academy, students across Lagos, Abuja, Port Harcourt, and throughout Nigeria complete it fully online, with past schooling potentially counting through free PLAR.
Royal Ontario Academy operates under Ontario Ministry inspection, teaching the Ontario curriculum and granting OSSD credits. Families can read independent Royal Ontario Academy reviews on OurKids.net.
Why Nigerian Families Are Looking Past JAMB
- no JAMB UTME requirement, since the OSSD is an Ontario, not Nigerian, credential
- free PLAR review of WAEC, NECO, JSS, and SSS records already completed
- coursework based evaluation instead of a single exam sitting
- fully online delivery, with no need to relocate out of Nigeria
- rolling enrolment, so you are not stuck waiting for a new term
- identical tuition for students studying from Nigeria and from Canada, with further savings when you take multiple courses at once
Taken together, it is an efficient, cost effective, and internationally recognized way to prepare for university admission abroad.
Free PLAR: What We Review
PLAR stands for Prior Learning Assessment and Recognition. The ROA Principal reviews your records individually. For the full process, see our PLAR guide for international students. This can include:
- official transcripts and report cards
- JSS1, JSS2, or JSS3 records
- SSS1, SSS2, or SSS3 records
- WAEC (WASSCE) or NECO (SSCE) results, where available
A WAEC or NECO result is not converted into credits through a fixed formula. The Principal confirms your grade placement and credit total in writing.
Matching a Nigerian Education to Ontario Grade Levels
Grade matching at a glance
| Nigerian school stage | Local credential or exam | Typical age | Ontario grade equivalency |
|---|---|---|---|
| JSS3 | Junior WAEC (BECE) | 14 to 15 | Grade 9 |
| SSS1 | School transcripts and report cards | 15 to 16 | Grade 10 |
| SSS2 | School transcripts and report cards | 16 to 17 | Grade 11 |
| SSS3 | WAEC (WASSCE) or NECO (SSCE) | 17 to 18 | Grade 12 |
This is a general reference, not a guarantee. Your real placement comes from the Principal’s review of your records.
What This Means for Your Credits
The full OSSD is 30 credits. Once PLAR recognizes your prior learning from Nigeria, those credits apply straight to that total, so most students skip going back to Grade 9.
| Ontario grade equivalency reached | Maximum PLAR credits | Credits still needed |
|---|---|---|
| Grade 9, for example JSS3 completed | Up to 8 credits | 22 credits |
| Grade 10, for example SSS1 completed | Up to 16 credits | 14 credits |
| Grade 11, for example SSS2 completed | Up to 23 credits | 7 credits |
| Grade 12, for example SSS3 with WASSCE or SSCE | Up to 24 credits | 6 credits |
ROA requires at least 6 credits completed with us for a granted OSSD, 4 of which must sit at the Grade 11 or 12 level.
Building Your Course Plan
Course plans are built around your PLAR outcome and your target program. A typical university focused plan may include courses such as:
- Grade 12 English
- Grade 12 Advanced Functions
- Grade 12 Calculus and Vectors
- Grade 12 Biology, Chemistry, or Physics

Do I need to repeat courses I have already completed?
Usually not. PLAR exists to recognize eligible previous learning.
