Earning an Ontario OSSD as a Kazakh Student

What Is PLAR?

For Kazakh students, this may include:

- records of basic secondary education, completed after Grade 9

PLAR is not an automatic swap. Your Kazakh records are not traded for a set number of Ontario credits. The Principal reviews each student one by one. The Principal decides your grade placement and credits after reading your official records.
How Your Kazakh Education Aligns with the OSSD
The Principal looks at your Kazakh studies stage by stage. Each stage is matched to the Ontario grade level it supports. Kazakh secondary school and the Ontario curriculum have a similar shape. Both start with foundation years. Both end with senior years that prepare students for university. This makes the match clear.
Your basic secondary years run through Grade 9. These years build the Ontario foundation. They can earn recognition in Kazakh or Russian language, mathematics, science, and the humanities. This is at about the Grade 9 and 10 level.
Your senior years are Grades 10 and 11. With the Attestat of General Secondary Education, they can earn recognition at the senior Grade 11 and 12 level. Subjects like algebra, geometry, physics, chemistry, biology, and the history of Kazakhstan are matched to Ontario senior courses. Your Unified National Testing results, where you have them, also help. Kazakhstan’s senior stage runs as either 2 or 3 years, depending on your school, so your Attestat may reflect either structure. The Principal reviews your studies on their own terms, whichever structure you completed.
One subject is worth checking early. Ontario requires a second-language credit. Many Kazakh students study Russian alongside Kazakh, not French. If you studied French or German, the Principal reviews it for this credit. If not, you take that course with us instead.
In Kazakhstan, classes are taught in Kazakh or Russian, depending on the school. Our team helps you build the English skills the senior courses need. For example, a student may have finished basic secondary school and part of senior secondary school in Kazakhstan. That student can receive recognition for earlier Ontario credits. The rest of the plan then focuses on senior Ontario courses and graduation requirements. The number of credits depends on your official records. The Principal confirms this after the review.
Minimum Credits Required at Royal Ontario Academy
To earn an ROA-granted OSSD, you must complete part of the diploma with us. You need at least 6 credits through ROA courses. At least 4 of these must be Grade 11 or Grade 12 credits.
PLAR credits count toward the 30 credits for the OSSD. But they do not count toward the 6 credits you must take with ROA. This rule protects academic integrity. It confirms your own achievement. What Courses Will Kazakh Students Take?
Each student gets an individual course plan. Your plan depends on four things: your past school records, the credits recognized through PLAR, the OSSD requirements you still need, and your university or college goals.
A university-focused plan may include courses such as:
- Grade 12 English
- Grade 12 Advanced Functions
- Grade 12 Calculus and Vectors
- Grade 12 Biology, Chemistry, or Physics
- Mathematics of Data Management
- business, social science, or humanities courses
The right courses depend on your target program. A student aiming for engineering may need different courses than one aiming for business, health science, or the humanities. Some students also take Ontario-specific courses, such as Civics and Citizenship, Career Studies, or OLC4O. The Principal confirms these in your course plan.
Graduation Requirements for Kazakh Students
PLAR can lower the number of courses you still need. But every student must still meet the OSSD graduation requirements that apply to them.

Meeting the Literacy Requirement
Every OSSD student must meet the Ontario literacy requirement. In Ontario, students often meet it by writing the Ontario Secondary School Literacy Test.
