Earn the OSSD Online from Egypt: A Guide for Egyptian Students
Egyptian students can earn Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) credits online while continuing their current studies. Royal Ontario Academy (ROA) is a virtual high school inspected by the Ontario Ministry of Education.
You can start at any time of year and study from home on your own schedule. Some students take individual Ontario courses, while others work toward the full OSSD.
If you have already completed high school studies in Egypt, ROA’s free Prior Learning Assessment and Recognition (PLAR) review may recognize eligible previous learning. This can reduce the number of courses you need to complete.

Why Egyptian Students Choose the OSSD
The OSSD offers a flexible pathway to university. Instead of depending entirely on one examination, students complete coursework and final evaluations throughout each course. Teachers provide assessment and feedback along the way.
Egyptian students and families may choose the OSSD because:
- Courses are fully online and available from anywhere in Egypt.

What Is PLAR and How Can It Help?
PLAR stands for Prior Learning Assessment and Recognition. It is the Ontario process used to evaluate previous education and determine whether it may count toward OSSD requirements.
At ROA, the Principal reviews each student individually. The review may consider:
- Official school transcripts and report cards
- The Basic Education Certificate, often called the Idadeya
- Thanaweya Amma results, if available
- IGCSE or American Diploma records from international schools
- Other official academic documents
PLAR is not an automatic exchange of Egyptian courses for a fixed number of Ontario credits. The Principal considers the student’s completed studies, subjects and academic documents before confirming any equivalencies.
When previous learning is recognized, those credits count toward the 30 credits required for the OSSD. As a result, many international students can focus on the remaining graduation requirements and senior courses needed for university admission.
How Egyptian Education May Be Assessed
ROA reviews Egyptian education stage by stage. The following table provides general guidance only. It does not guarantee a particular number of credits.

Students may have followed the Scientific track in Biology or Mathematics, the Literary track, or an international-school program. Subjects such as mathematics, physics, chemistry, biology and history are considered as part of the individual assessment.
French and Other Language Credits
Ontario diploma requirements may include a second-language credit. If you studied French in Egypt, the Principal will review your records to determine whether that learning can be recognized. If it cannot be recognized, your course plan will identify what you need to complete.
Documents Written in Arabic
Documents written in Arabic can still be submitted. ROA will explain when an official English translation is required. You do not necessarily need to have completed Thanaweya Amma before requesting an assessment; current transcripts and report cards may also be reviewed.
After examining your official documents, the Principal will confirm your credits and remaining requirements in writing.
What Courses Will Egyptian Students Take?
Every student receives an individual course plan. The plan depends on previous education, recognized credits, outstanding OSSD requirements and future university or college goals.
A university-focused plan may include:
- Grade 12 English
- Grade 12 Advanced Functions
- Grade 12 Calculus and Vectors
- Grade 12 Biology, Chemistry, or Physics
- Mathematics of Data Management
- Business, social science or humanities courses
The correct combination depends on the intended program. For example, an engineering applicant may need a different group of courses than a student applying to business, health sciences or the humanities.
Some students may also need Ontario-specific requirements such as Civics and Citizenship, Career Studies or OLC4O. The Principal will identify these requirements in the student’s course plan.
OSSD Graduation Requirements for Egyptian Students
PLAR may reduce the number of courses a student needs, but every student must still satisfy the graduation requirements that apply to them.

Egyptian students can usually complete approved community involvement activities in their own community. ROA provides guidance on suitable activities and required documentation.
Studying Online from Egypt
ROA courses are available online, so students do not need to travel to Ontario. Courses include lessons, assignments, quizzes, discussions and final evaluations. Teachers provide feedback and academic support throughout the course.
Students need reliable internet access, a computer and the required technology for online learning and proctored examinations. ROA can help families plan appropriate timing for coursework and final evaluations.

Is the OSSD recognized by universities?
The OSSD is a recognized Canadian secondary school credential, but each university and program sets its own admission requirements. Universities outside Canada establish their own admission policies, so students should confirm the requirements for each institution and program.
