Students who want to keep competitive business, commerce, accounting and finance options open should plan for ENG4U, MHF4U and MCV4U. MDM4U is also valuable and is accepted by some programs, but it cannot replace Calculus where MCV4U is specifically required.

How to interpret these admission numbers
The three programs serve different applicant profiles. Schulich is highly competitive and evaluates both grades and supplementary information. TMU requires calculus and publishes a mid 80s range. Sheridan has lower stated minimums and accepts any one of three Grade 12 university mathematics courses.
ROA grade targets for planning
For highly competitive business schools, aim for 90% or higher. For competitive accounting and finance programs, aim for the mid to high 80s. For college bachelor degrees with lower stated minimums, aim for at least the mid 70s so that you enter with a stronger foundation for degree-level mathematics, accounting and writing. These are planning targets, not guarantees.
Students should not choose a program only because its minimum is lower. Compare curriculum, co-op, campus experience, cost, professional preparation, transfer options and the mathematics used in first year.
MCV4U or MDM4U: which mathematics course should you choose?
The answer depends on the target program. Schulich accepts either MCV4U or MDM4U and recommends calculus. TMU Accounting and Finance requires MCV4U. Sheridan accepts MCV4U, MDM4U or MHF4U.
Students who are uncertain should take MHF4U and MCV4U. Adding MDM4U can be helpful when timetable space permits because data analysis and statistics are valuable in business. However, students should not overload their schedule in a way that lowers required-course marks.
The supplementary application can change the strategy
At Schulich, academic performance and the supplementary application are both important. Strong grades do not automatically compensate for a weak supplementary submission. Students should prepare examples that show leadership, teamwork, resilience, responsibility and empathy. These examples can come from employment, family responsibilities, sports, arts, volunteering, school clubs or personal projects.
- Keep a simple activity record with dates, responsibilities, challenges and outcomes.
- Practice answering questions within a time limit while speaking clearly and directly.
- Use specific examples instead of broad claims such as “I am a leader.”
- Review deadlines early. Supplementary applications often close before students expect.
College bachelor degrees and applied business learning
Ontario colleges offer bachelor degrees in business and accounting, not only diplomas. Sheridan’s Honours BBA Accounting is one example. College degrees often place a strong emphasis on applied projects, work experience and career preparation.
Students should compare the exact credential. A two year diploma, three year advanced diploma and four year honours bachelor degree are different. Planning for a future CPA pathway
Students interested in professional accounting should review the current requirements from CPA Ontario. Professional education requirements are changing, including a new CPA Professional Program launching in 2027. The safest approach is to confirm that the chosen degree and course sequence provide the undergraduate knowledge required for the current CPA route at the time of graduation.
A program’s use of the word accounting does not automatically mean every professional prerequisite is built into every possible course combination. Students should review the institution’s accounting pathway and CPA Ontario information before selecting majors and electives.
A practical course and application timeline
- Grade 11: Complete the mathematics prerequisite for MHF4U and build strong writing skills. Explore business, economics or accounting electives if available.
- Before Grade 12: Compare at least two competitive university programs, one broader university option and one college bachelor degree.
- Grade 12 course selection: Include ENG4U and MHF4U. Add MCV4U when any target program requires calculus. Consider MDM4U as an additional quantitative course when the schedule allows.
- Application period: Apply through OUAC for universities and Ontario Colleges for college degree programs. Track all supplementary requirements separately.
