A school principal must balance student support with fairness, academic integrity and consistent educational standards.

As Principal of Royal Ontario Academy, Phoebe Martin is responsible for ensuring that students receive appropriate guidance while the school’s courses, assessments, records and academic decisions remain aligned with Ontario Ministry of Education expectations.

Her approach places the student’s best interests at the centre of decision-making while protecting the credibility of Ontario secondary school credits and academic outcomes.

Educational and Professional Background

Phoebe holds a Post-Graduate Certificate with a specialization in Human Resources. She also holds a Bachelor’s degree in English Literature from Stella Maris College.

Her professional background includes more than five years of experience in academic advising, academic integrity, student conduct, grade appeals, instructor support, quality assurance and student onboarding.

Before joining Royal Ontario Academy, Phoebe worked as an Academic Advisor at Lambton College in Mississauga at the Queen’s College campus. In that role, she supported over 3000 students and more than 50 instructors with academic progression, policy interpretation, academic standards, appeals, assessment practices and student conduct matters.

Supporting Students and Academic Integrity

Phoebe has extensive experience helping students understand academic expectations and address barriers that may affect their progress.

Her work has included reviewing academic integrity cases, supporting grade-appeal processes, identifying students who may be at risk, coordinating tutoring support and helping students understand institutional policies.

She also brings a mental health-informed and student-centred approach to academic advising. Phoebe is certified in Mental Health First Aid and Standard First Aid, including CPR and AED training.

Phoebe’s Role at Royal Ontario Academy

As Principal, Phoebe provides academic and administrative oversight across the school.

Her responsibilities include:

Final Responsibility for PLAR Decisions

Prior Learning Assessment and Recognition, commonly known as PLAR, allows eligible students to receive recognition for learning completed outside the Ontario secondary school system.

Chris Slade supports the preliminary stages of the process by gathering documents, reviewing records for completeness and preparing student files.

Phoebe is responsible for reviewing the available evidence and making all final decisions concerning PLAR, equivalent credits, prerequisite recognition, diploma requirements and academic placement.

This separation of responsibilities ensures that students receive practical support during the intake process while final academic decisions remain with the Principal.

Maintaining Academic Quality

Phoebe’s experience in academic integrity and instructor support helps Royal Ontario Academy maintain clear and consistent expectations across its courses.

She has supported instructors with assessment design, syllabus language, classroom observations, academic integrity procedures and the responsible use of technology in education.

At ROA, she helps ensure that course content, assessment practices and student records are complete, accurate and appropriate for Ontario secondary school credits.

Preparing Students for Future Success

Phoebe believes that students should understand both the academic expectations of their courses and the responsibilities that come with independent online learning.

By combining clear standards with student support, she helps students make informed decisions, respond to feedback, maintain academic integrity and progress toward their educational goals.
