Free PLAR: What We Review
PLAR stands for Prior Learning Assessment and Recognition. The ROA Principal reviews your official records individually and confirms which Ontario credits apply. For the full process, see our PLAR guide for international students. This can include:
- official school transcripts and report cards
- Zhongkao results
- the Senior Secondary School Graduation Certificate, where available
- Gaokao results, where available
There is no fixed formula that trades a Zhongkao or Gaokao score for a set number of credits. Every file is read individually, and the Principal confirms your grade placement and credit total in writing.

What This Means for Your Credits
You need 30 credits in total for the OSSD. Credits recognized through PLAR go straight toward that total, which is why most students skip restarting at Grade 9.

Building Your Course Plan
Your plan is built around your PLAR outcome and your target program. Chinese applicants commonly aim for engineering, computer science, or business at universities such as the University of Toronto, Waterloo, or UBC. A typical university focused plan includes:
