Why Turkish students choose an Ontario OSSD
For many Turkish students, the path to university runs through the YKS, a single, highly competitive national exam. The OSSD offers a different route. It is an English-language diploma recognized by universities in Canada, the United States, the United Kingdom, Europe and beyond, and it lets you build a strong university application without staking everything on one exam day.
Three things matter most to the families we work with. The tuition is the same for Turkish and Canadian students, with no international surcharge. You can begin at any time of year and study at a pace that suits you. And you do not repeat learning you have already done, because eligible prior study can be recognized at no cost.
How your Lise Diploması is reviewed
Your prior learning is assessed through PLAR, which stands for Prior Learning Assessment and Recognition. It is a formal Ontario process, and at Royal Ontario Academy it is free. Our Principal reviews your official MEB records, your Karne and e-Okul transcript, subject by subject, and recognizes the Ontario credits your studies genuinely support.
It is important to be clear about what this is and is not. A Turkish diploma is not simply converted into an Ontario one, and no school can promise a fixed number of credits in advance. Instead, each student’s record is assessed on its own evidence. A student who has completed several years of lise, whether at an Anadolu Lisesi, a Fen Lisesi, a Sosyal Bilimler Lisesi or another MEB school, will usually have a substantial foundation to draw on, particularly across mathematics, sciences, Turkish language and literature, social sciences, foreign language study and physical education. Because Turkish lise grades are recorded on a 0 to 100 scale, they translate clearly into the percentages universities look at. Students who hold a Lise Diploması from an Anatolian or science high school in particular tend to arrive with strong English and a solid grounding in mathematics and the sciences, which sets them up well for the senior Grade 12 courses they take with us. The exact recognition is confirmed in writing by the Principal once your official records have been reviewed.
One subject is worth checking early. If you formally studied French at your school, and your school can certify the grades, the Ontario French requirement may be recognized. Many Turkish students study English, and some study German, neither of which can be used for this particular requirement, so if you did not study French you simply take that course with us.
How PLAR reduces the courses you still need
The OSSD requires 30 credits in total, along with compulsory subjects, a literacy requirement, an online learning requirement and 40 hours of community involvement. You can read the full breakdown on our OSSD Requirements page.
When prior learning is recognized through PLAR, it counts toward those credits, so you are not starting from zero. For most Turkish students this means the foundation years are largely accounted for, and your studies with us focus on the senior Grade 12 courses that universities actually use to make admission decisions. Every student still completes a meaningful set of credits through Royal Ontario Academy instruction, which is both an Ontario expectation and the part that earns your OSSD its standing.
The Principal also confirms how the compulsory framework applies to you, which depends on the year you began high school. Depending on that year, the Technological Education credit is either not required or recognized through your prior learning, so it does not add a course to your plan. The Financial Literacy graduation requirement is typically waived for students who enter in Grade 11 or 12 with their earlier years recognized. You are told clearly where each requirement is met, so there are no surprises later.
What you complete at Royal Ontario Academy
Your individual plan is set by the Principal, but most Turkish students study a focused group of senior courses with us. Ontario universities require six Grade 12 courses for admission, and you complete those six at Royal Ontario Academy, chosen to match your target program. A common science or mathematics plan includes Advanced Functions, Calculus and Vectors, a Grade 12 science, English and Mathematics of Data Management. Students heading toward business or the humanities follow a different senior mix suited to those programs.
Alongside the senior courses, two short Ontario-specific half credits, Civics and Citizenship and Career Studies, are always completed with us, because they have no Turkish equivalent. The order in which you take your courses follows Ontario’s prerequisite rules, and where you begin a senior course while still finishing your studies in Türkiye, the Principal confirms the prerequisite in writing first.
Meeting the literacy requirement from Türkiye
Every OSSD student must meet a literacy requirement. Students in Ontario usually sit the literacy test, but because you are studying from Türkiye, you meet it instead through the Ontario Secondary School Literacy Course, known as OLC4O, which you take online with us. It is a straightforward, fully recognized way to satisfy the requirement without travelling to Ontario.
Studying online from Türkiye
All of your Royal Ontario Academy courses are delivered online, so the Ontario online learning requirement is met automatically, and you can study from any city in Türkiye. Our courses are built in smaller units with quick, personal teacher feedback, so independent study never feels like studying alone. You also complete 40 hours of community involvement, and we guide you on activities that qualify.
One practical note worth keeping in mind. University admission is separate from your diploma. Earning the OSSD is what we handle. Some universities or professional bodies may also ask for a credential evaluation of your Turkish documents through a service such as WES, which is a different process.
